Dr. Daniel Mendham,Principal Research Scientist of The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Australia came to Faculty of Forestry UGM on December 5th 2023. He shares his experiences in peatland restoration, specifically about his project called Gambut Kita on Kalimantan and Sumatera.
Peatland restoration is important for Indonesia (locally) and worldwide (globally). It needs more sustainable technic to restore peatland. So that, it could be beneficial for local communities, and environment. He said that local communities is a key to a successful restoration, besides technical things that already planned. It needs multi stakeholder strong collaboration, included including communities in restoration planning. As project administrator, we have to understand what peoples (communities) need because they have to execute those plans. If they don’t want to do those plans, the restoration process would be constrained.
