YOGYAKARTA – Approximately 41% of forest area in Indonesia or 77.8 ha in a degraded state as a result of forest destruction. From the area of the forest rather critical condition as much as 61%, 30% critical and very critical 6%. To improve the condition of the forest, academics and researchers from UGM Forestry fakkultas proposes the use of nitrogen-fixing plants to improve soil fertility due to forest degradation.

Shrimp pine (Casuarina equisetifolia) is one of the plants for rehabilitation of critical areas in the coastal areas. By utilizing media Frankish symbiotic microorganisms, found in the stems and roots pohom, are known to accelerate plant growth and improve environmental quality through nitrogen fixation. “Franks also able to form nodule fir shrimp. This improves the ability to form nodule nitrogen fixation capacity in the air, “said the lecturer of the Faculty of Forestry, Winastuti Dwi Atmanto Winastuti, in open doctoral examination at the Faculty of Forestry, Saturday (24/8).

Actinomycetes Frankia including free-living and symbiotic with casuarina so as to tie up nitrogen from the air. Besides able to form hyphae, sectional and branching. The hyphae are formed in the root nodules containing hemoglobin. “Belay nitrogen depends on the concentration of hemoglobin and acetylene reduction rate,” he said.

From his research, most of the nitrogen in land planted with pine sand shrimp comes from the activity of microorganisms, especially Frankish capable tie up nitrogen from the air. The mean nitrogen produced by pine shrimp near the beach as much as 455.66 kg / ha, equivalent to 986.23 kg urea / ha. Even the shrimp pine planting in sandy coastal land also increases the C-organic 133.33 to 433.33% compared to the land of sand tanamannnya nonexistent.

After ditanamani fir shrimp, said Winastuti, land sand containing an average of C ranged from 5.85 to 6.82 tonnes / ha. The presence of an evergreen plant shrimp are also able to raise soil nitrogen 0.02% -0.04%, compared to the land of sand beaches that are not planted fir shrimp that has a nitrogen content of 0.01%.
